Description
Let’s step away from the noise of publishing and book success for a session to explore the actual craft of writing. People are so focused on their book goals that they tend to skip over learning the skills to be good writers. People think “Oh I am not a writer. Bob is a writer.” Bob wasn’t a writer either until he practiced and followed some proper direction. Jumping into being an author without any proper training or coaching will lead to a book in print that you don’t want to promote. Many authors in hindsight regret that they didn’t take more time to attune to their writing abilities and skills. When you work to be a better writer and hone your craft through writing a book, you find yourself noticed in other ways because of your effective communication. That passionate essay you wrote to apply for a Masters program got you accepted because the board could hear your unique voice. The emails you send, and the blogs you write are more on point because you take less words to say what you want to communicate. This comes from training as a writer.
This month’s SIG is an interactive workshop on writing. I will present some of my top tips on how to become a better writer, as well as the biggest pet peeves. You will have the inside scoop on why some books you read just don’t sit with you right, and others you remember for decades to come. Becoming an author is fundamentally about writing well, and few people spend the time necessary to practice a craft. You can’t just fly a plane for the first time without lessons. You could but you would probably crash! Same with books… while less perilous, the act of publishing a book written by an amateur with no writing training is the same set up for a crash and burn.
I will be training on:
- Skills for writing in a simple effective way
- Writing pet peeves that make you look like an amateur
- Knowing when it is time to start writing the book or be public with your writing
- Opportunities to do some writing and share live.
So many of us write in private and never share what we have to say. When we get open and vocal with our writing, it builds confidence. I will offer some writing prompts, but no one will be required to share, or write. But if you are serious about advancing your writing skills, this is a great opportunity to show up for yourself!
