Description
Using the LA wildfires as a backdrop, this talk connects the profound loss of home to core emotional needs and highlights strategies for resilience and support. By understanding the multiple levels of meaning associated with such a loss, coaches and clients can begin to find avenues for successful coping.
Takeaways:
- A home is deeply tied to the fulfillment of multiple emotional needs: It is a shelter (safety), a gathering place (inclusion), a home base for children and memory (caring), an expression of one’s authentic self (authenticity), and a place connected to spiritual meaning (purpose).
- Loss disrupts identity and stability: Losing a home can provoke anguish as it represents the loss of family history, belonging, and security.
- Understanding emotional needs enhances resilience: Recognizing these needs helps individuals and communities address grief and rebuild meaning after trauma.
- Emotional intelligence fosters effective support: Coaches can guide clients through loss by helping them reconnect with core needs and rediscover a sense of purpose.
